Before today, Daniel “Danny” J Gokey is a virtual unknown. As we search for his name online, we could not find anything about him. Hard to imagine that in this age of cellphones, WiFI, MySpace and blogging- Danny has not found his way into the world of internet. The names that came up before the blogosphere spread his name all across the world wide web were that of the Gokey triplets (where one is named Daniel), a Christian Praise and Worship music downloads featuring the names Shirley Murdock, Khristian Dentley, and Daniel Gokey (*Could he be”our” Danny since he is a Christian music teacher?), a death notice for Daniel J. Gokey, 89, of Prairie du Chien. and wine owner for Gokey’s Wine Market. The rest were irrelevant. We wonder if he has ever googled his name before American Idol and came up with nothing found.
Well that is about to change. His life is changed the moment he was seen by thousands of American viewers and yes hundreds of thousands more worldwide since American Idol is syndicated in over 100 countries. Googling his name within the last 24 hours from his first exposure in American Idol gave a massive surge of information about him but all in reference to his American Idol audition!
Interestingly enough, the domain names dannygokey.com, dannyjgokey.com, danielgokey.com, danieljgokey.com were already taken but not used- all parked websites owned under (sucky) Godaddy.com! We had to settle for dannygokeyfansite.com. Here’s a tip, if you think you are going to be famous or are about to embark on a public journey one day, make sure you own your own domain name!! We’re not sure if any of the above parked sites are even owned by Danny himself!
Who is Daniel J Gokey?
This we know thus far:
>> He is a 28 year old Christian Music Teacher and choir leader for Faith Builders International Ministries from Milwaukee, Wisconsin who traveled over 400 miles to audition for American Idol Season 8 in Kansas City, Missouri. The audition was held on August 8, 2008 in Kemper Arena. America first saw Daniel on the second day of the 4-hour 2-day Season Premiere of American Idol on January 14th 2009.
>> He wore American Idol audition number 70891 pinned on his shirt during the tryout.
>> Born: April 24th, 1980
>> He has four sisters Janell, Angela, Tracey and Gina, and one brother named Charles
>> Two of his cousins Mark Bolin and Jessica Bzdawka are mentioned here in this Fox 11 local news interview
>> He breezed through the audition process, wowing all four judges and won the hearts of America. Never mind that he chose a rather trite and overused song in Idol auditions and contest proper, “I heard it through the Grapevine” by Marvin Gaye- he was phenomenal!! All four judges agreed, he is going straight to Hollywood!
>> His best friend is Jamar Rogers who auditioned with him and also made it through Hollywood!
>> He looks like a younger version of Robert Downey Jr!
>> His face looks so memorable and likable and he can project well on camera, he could be in the movies! He should be in the movies!
>> We’re not sure if his eyeglasses is just for show or he really wears prescription glasses. (A reader writes, they are prescription glasses!). We’d love to know the brand of his eyeglasses!!

>> He has a MySpace account put out very recently and was made open to the public very shortly. He had to set it to private after a massive amount of hits poured in and people were just nabbing his photos left and right and was bombarded with huge amount of messages, more than he could handle.

“My Name is Daniel J. Gokey and I am 28 years old and I currently reside in Milwaukee Wisconsin where I was born and raised. I come from a pretty big family with 4 sisters: Angela, Janell, Gina, and Tracey along with my brother Charles. I also have 12 nieces and nephews with 2 more on the way this summer. Many people can relate with me in saying that 2008 was a rough year.
I was married on May 15th, 2004 to the love of my life Sophia Martinez, we had been together since 1997 and decided that it was time to unite our love in marriage forever. My wife was born with a heart condition that she previously had corrective surgeries for as a child. To make a long story short, she had surgery this year again and passed away on July 9th of 2008. I was devastated. We were married for 4 years, and it abruptly came to an end. Since her passing, the journey has not been easy. But I can honestly say that my faith in God has brought me thus far. One thing that has brought much hope to me is the thought of carrying her legacy on, through a non-profit organization for children I founded in her honor, Sophia’s Heart Foundation. >> His number to call on the first semi-final round was 1-866-436-5712. The lines were kept open for two hours to vote. Voting is open for United States residents only. He sang Mariah Carey’s “Hero” and he was in fact dubbed as the “hero of the night.”
>> He performed third on the first kick off into the finals of Top 13- Michael Jackson Theme where he sang “PYT (Pretty Young Thing). Simon thought it was a terrific performance but the dancing was hideous. His number was 1-866-436-5703.
>> In Grand Ole Opry or better known simply as Country week, he took Carrie Underwood’s “Jesus Take the Wheel” and he sang 8th. His Number was 1-866-IDOLS-08

We normally hate it when Idol plays on people’s lives and the audience’ emotions and use catastrophe’s and tragedies to highlight a contestant in an elaborate drama. In Danny Gokey’s case it was at least somewhat sensitively done (although they still hyped it up through the entire show using it as a teaser for a good number of commercial breaks!) calling his audition as “nothing shorts of an emotional sacrifice.”
Four weeks before the audition in July 2008, his wife (of 5 years?) Sophia passed away during a heart surgery. She had a congenital heart condition and according to Danny has endured 2 surgeries already when she was younger. She didn’t survive the third. He is still obviously grieving and is in a lot of pain. The sorrow and pain he has to carry the rest of his life. We’re pretty sure Idol writers knew just what to ask to render such emotional responses from Danny. It was truly heartbreaking to watch. He started Sophia’s Heart Foundation in her name.
For that our hearts went our for Danny and then we heard him sing in front of the four judges. It was the most wonderful voice we’ve heard in the entire season premiere. He is showing to become a front runner in the competition this early on! We fervently hope the judges will bring him to the Top 12 so America could see and judge him for themselves. He is a finalist!
He has a lot of potential as with other contestants but here is a man sincere and unassuming, whose got heart and soul and who is offering the entire competition in memory of his wife.

Interesting article. All I can say is that, Danny J is a simple guy with amazing vocals! We are all convinced he will be out next American Idol. He is an excellent role model, and has a true love for singing. He did have a myspace account which he deleted prior to the show. He is not all together outside of the world of internet. Of course all of us friends have his personal e-mail, cell phone, and all that; but he is very reserved, and we can’t blame the guy! Celebrities need to be a little more reserved now adays! lol You will get to know more about him as time goes by….!
PS. They are prescription glasses!
I love this guy more than anyone else in this year. though asnoop, jasmine, jorge etc….though they have good vocal too. He is even better than Adam ( this guy gt amzing vocal too, goodlooking but nothing new, im boring with this kind of ppl), according to me. Because he got the mature looking, i can feel something deep inside his heart, something interesting, something new that i cant see on the other contestants ..or maybe just becos the AI producers promote himt oo much ^__^. but nvm i still like him! The glasses with white sides were Emporio Armani, he’s also worn a Takumi frame, it was the black one with the 2 long openings on each side and then there were the Dolce & Gabana and Versace. I want to be his optician.

So why is it that Danny Gokey is allowed to have a fan website but Ricky Braddy’s was threatened by Fremantle and Fox claiming it was an unfair advantage?? Ricky got ZERO airtime and sang better than all the contestants on Tuesday night. He was up against people who ALL had a story told to the world during auditions. Why is it that Ricky and his fans are criticized for showing support? Contestants should not be chosen based on a story…choose those with the best talent. Danny, you have a great voice and deserve a spot in the top 12, but you don’t deserve special treatment because of your story.
Hello Anonymous! Thanks for the visit. We found your comment about Ricky Braddy’s fans being “threatened” HARD to believe! Would you show us some proof? We’re concerned because the last thing we want is for this site to be taken down by an order coming from Freemantle or Fox. Last time we checked, there are tons of OTHER FAN WEBSITES for their favorites! There’s a Casey Carlson, Anoop Desai, Michael Sarver, Lil Rounds fan sites among others. We are also not the only one having a Danny fansite. There are a lot of us. You just need to google it!
We don’t think Danny is getting special treatment. It just looks that way because it appears he has more fan base than everyone else.
It’s still anybody’s ball game. You should know how America votes! Chris Daughtry was shockingly eliminated and it could happen to Danny too!! BUT we have HIGH HOPES that Danny’s fans are going to be there every step of the way and DIAL his NUMBER and VOTE! It all comes down to voting! It doesn’t matter which hopeful’s got a fansite or not, it all goes down to the voting. Thank you for bringing this up. We’ll look into what you’re saying because we really can’t believe it…
I’m a Dan fan too! Glad to see he made it to the final 12 as I felt sure he would from his initial (televised) audition. He’s got a great range and fairly unique, raspy tone, decent control and he obviously pays attention to phrasing. I haven’t been this hopeful about a contestant since Ruben Studdard!
Way to go, Danny! Hammer the lyrics until you’re dreaming them! Show off your range, but try not to go over the top with the riffs and runs. Stay true to the obvious emotional investment you’re putting into your performances. Can’t wait to hear what you’re going to do next, although I have no doubt you’re going to be in the final 4!

I have nothing against Danny, he is great talent, but upset that someone who has had his story plastered across the world is allowed to have a fan based website and Ricky who had no airtime can’t in claims that it is an UNFAIR ADVANTAGE. “Hey loyal Braddy Bunch Followers!
Here is the what is going on. We were contacted and threatened in horrendous ways by FremantleMedia, 19 Entertainment, and FOX, explaining that we were an unfair advantage to the rest of the contestants by operating this site. They threatened us with a cease and desist letter, and instructed us that if we didn’t comply they would pull ricky from the competition.
As we are looking out for the best of Ricky, for now we have complied. We are a very very smart group over here, and plan on taking this infringement on our first amendment to the top. Many people think this has been taken down because “the brady bunch” had issues, which let me explain IS NOT THE CASE!
We will be back! So please hold on while we get all our ducks in a row, and settle up with the wrong doings of American Idol.
We encourage you to please keep rooting for Ricky, as regardless he will succeed and has a VERY bright future! For some reason they have REALLY come down hard on us, and not others in the competition…whatever that is suppose to mean!

Does anyone know who makes the glasses Danny was wearing on performance night? They look like tortise shell on the sides…I paused it on my DVR, and it looked like the letters XIX were written on the side. Kinda blurry, I could be wrong. I have been looking *everywhere* with no luck.

Is it wise for the administrators of the Ricky site to simultaneously be explaining the situation and showing some obvious discontent towards the very organization that had given this talented man a chance to start? Usually, when a legal matter is being hashed out, both sides keep it under wraps. It seems like the Rickey site is airing out its dirty laundry when it perhaps should be laying low. If Ricky wants to make the top 12, I don’t think it is wise to take it to the organization that can make this happen. Obviously, they saw something.

I don’t care what people say about pity votes or that he’s not as original as Adam or ANYTHING. I’ll tell you that he’s been my favorite since I actually started paying attention this season, and he will still be my favorite Idol possibly for the rest of my life. He’s a great performer, he has soul, talent, and everything else that would take too long to list. It’s amazing how much dedication and emotion he has while performing, and he’s an inspiration and a hero to me, and undoubtfully millions of others. Danny has touched so many hearts, including mine, and I hope I can do that too, someday. His music makes people happy, and he is just a great guy. Good luck, Danny. I met Danny at the Grove in Los Angeles on Sat., May 2nd. He was very nice and allowed me take a photo with him. Im not one to be star struck, but Danny has my prayers to be blessed along with everyone else who has lost a spouse or partner. I wish him the win.

You are the BEST up there in my opinion and it is obvious that everyone loves you! I can understand that 2008 was a tough year for you as for me too!!! I am 17 years old and I lost my dad in January 2008 and it wasnt easy at all. I pray for you every night and pray that “YOU” will be the next American Idol…. I know you can do it. Just wanted to express how great I think Danny did tonight as he does every week… The other performances were great too…loved Adam & Allison’s duet, must say…Danny and Chris really sounded great together too!!! I noticed there are a lot of negative comments going around recently though, which I was very dissapointed to see. I really think it’s too bad that there are so many people interested in shooting Danny down over the extra attention he received due to a very big loss in his life. People can be very rude, selfish, and hateful with their words. Danny has an excellent chance of becoming our next American idol this year, I believe, but beyond that… he is already famous and will go far for sure with his beautiful vocals! What an altering change for a person who was just an ordinary, middle classed, guy like you and I, just a few months ago! Can you even imagine what it would be like losing the love of your life and then becoming a famous celebrity the next month? Talk about an emotional rollercoaster! Those are two very life-altering changes! People should realize this and maybe quit thinking about themselves for a minute. Unfortunately for innocent people such as Danny, celebrity’s never get that break. There are always hundreds and thousands of people out there using them simply for a ‘hot-story’ . Hey Danny, I admire you for your amazing singing ability and, most important, for being a strong Christian. I cannot imagine what you have been through. I almost lost my dad from a heartattack. He is 54 years old. I would of been devastated. Your story would of definately helped me through the tragedy. *please do not take this in a bad way*-I am glad you did not win American Idol. WHAT? Because the world might of dragged you away from God. People always say, “That cant happen to me.” There is a chance it would. I can imagine you being a Christian song artist. I am a Christian, also. I listen to alot of Christian music on a station called, “Z88.3″. It is Contemperary Christian.

Been an avid follower of Danny since the 1st day of elimination for the lucky 12. My heart was touched by his rendition of Hero and from then on became a fan of his. I know how good this person is.. can feel and see it in his face. All the more that ive been amazed by this man when i read good write ups about his life especially about his wife. His rendition of the song You Are So Beautiful really touches my heart and even made me cry when i first heard it in the Idol. Abdul’s comment is perfect.. BREATHLESS… coz i felt the same way too.. If only im in America and can vote.. i would spend some money to vote so that Danny will win in the Idol. I think he is just perfect to be America’s Idol coz he is a reflection of a good person. My heart broke off when he was kicked off and until now still feeling bitter about it. I wish for my Idol Danny? wish he can do an album and for sure i will get myself a copy of it when i get the chance to visit America again. I don’t understand how this guy has any fans. The week after he got some criticism from Simon he tried to resurrect his dead wife. How? He sang “Endless Love” with a harp player on stage(heaven) and looks to heaven on the last note. Tacky and classless. Plus he is super nerd and excellent karaoke artist. He promised to be another Taylor Hicks. The both of them can now tour together and perform at orthodontist conventions and mall openings.
Danny, it is such a blessing to have you on Idol season 8. You have touched many lives and it is also good to know that you kept true to yourself. Your wife would have been proud of you . Your relationship with God really came out as you performed for America.You have such passion and anointing that i dare you not to lose sight of God ,because Hollywood can spoil the very best..It really shows that you are a choir director, and a Worship leader. Hello Danny congradulations on your sucess and also from Milwaukee I am also trying tvery hard to fulfill my dreams. Recently i auditioned for iPOP! (International Presenatation Of Performers). 200 different talent auditioned and out 200 ony 20 were chosen. In being acepted to attend IPOP! i am planning a trip to Los Angeles for the convention. I am currently looking for donations to help with my trip. The approximate cost of the trip is $5000.00 which includes everything except transportation. The convention is from January 8th- January12th , 2010. I am required to have the funds by December 1 st m, 2009. I would really appreceate any help that you would be able to offer me.
