Constantine Maroulis wants in on ‘Rock of Ages’ movie

Constantine Maroulis has his sights set on Hollywood – again.

Now that he’s been nominated for a Tony Award and declared Broadway.com’s 2009 Star of the Year for his leading role as Drew in the Sunset Strip-inspired big hair revue known as “Rock of Ages,” Maroulis is gunning for the feature film gig.

New Line acquired the rights to the super successful play in October of last year, with Adam Shankman set to direct, but ever since, the studio’s president Toby Emmerich has been besieged by e-mails from fans demanding that Maroulis play Drew in the movie version. So what does the “American Idol” season four finalist have to say about it? “You know how the ‘Idol’ fans are, they’ll kill for their Idol,” Maroulis tells Idol Tracker. That’s not to say he wouldn’t welcome a shot at the big screen version. “Of course I’m interested,” he says. “I think I sort of helped build this thing and it’s a part that’s almost been catered for me. If it works out, that would be wonderful.”

What’s it dependent on, you ask? So did we. “I’ve never been part of a big fancy movie, so I don’t know,” says Maroulis, “but I imagine that they have to finalize a script, green-light this and that, attach whatever other stars they want to get… But you could have an interesting Jennifer Hudson sort of story all over again. And I’d love to see Will Ferrell and Jack Black as part of the ensemble. Jack Black as Lonnie the narrator and Will Ferrell as Dennis the club owner with his cowbell kind of vibe? That would be amazing!” [The aforementioned characters are pictured; Lonnie, who bears a striking resemblance to Black, is sitting front and center, while long-haired hippie Dennis is to Maroulis' side.]

To that end, executive producer Janet Billig says any potential casting decisions are “premature” at this point. A rep for Farrell and Black could not be reached for comment.
