Will Alex Lambert return by popular demand?
It has the endorsement of actress Demi Moore and Season 2 "American Idol" contestant Kimberly Caldwell. And as of Tuesday morning, the online petition to bring gravelly velvet-voiced former contestant Alex Lambert back into the "Idol" competition has 14,679 … 14,685 … 14,711 … signatures. When the petition reaches its goal of 15,000, which it may well have done by the time you read this, it'll keep collecting signatures toward ever bigger goals: 20,000 … then 25,000.
Jessica Bongiorno, the 29-year-old "Idol" fan who started the petition on Change.org as soon as Lambert's elimination was announced on Thursday night, hopes the groundswell of support gets the attention of the show's producers.
Bongiorno writes on her website: "i have been watching idol from the first episode of the very first season, religiously. no contestant, ever, has had such an effect on me like alex lambert."
According to Bongiorno, the petition "received 5,000 signatures in less than 24 hours" and has been spiraling ever since. Her goal? To pressure the "Idol" producers into adding Lambert back into the mix as the 13th candidate, à la last season's Anoop Desai. "Alex was ROBBED," she contends.
But whatever else it does, the petition is serving as a virtual gathering place for fans of the dimpled, digestively challenged former contestant with the artful mullet. Alex devotees worldwide — as far away as Ain Saade, Lebanon; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Tallinn, Estonia; and San José, Costa Rica — have expressed their support. "I think I cried more than Alex when he was sent home," writes Savannah Boanca of Brookfield, Il.
What's more, friends of Alex's mother sent Bongiorno a slideshow tribute to their pal's son. Awww.
What do you think? Should Alex be brought back? Did the "American Idol" producers get slipped up by a fast-ripening banana? Or are you wondering where Lily Scott's petition is? We'd love to hear your thoughts.

Alex needs to be brought back, his voice is so unique, & just like some of the judges have said… when you close your eyes you KNOW it’s alex… I think he has so much to offer in this competition, & just because some of the judges said he lacks stage presence & confidence, doesn’t mean he should be taken off the show for it… American Idol should be all about LEARNING each week, doing better each week, & Alex has progressed the most out of all the contestants, he deserves so much, & when he left that stage on Thursday night it felt as if ‘Ryan kicked a puppy to the curb’ & not ONLY that, but American Idol got rid of something more, RAW TALENT. You could see it in Alex’s eyes that he wanted this so bad, he was emotionally heart broken… & that’s what the competition needs, someone who WANTS this, not just someone who wants this for money or for a ‘fun adventure’ but someone who has the skills to make it through & be something wonderful, & Alex is just that.
